What is Human Design?
Human Design is often described as the synthesis of four major wisdom traditions – astrology, the Hindu chakra system, the Chinese I Ching, and modern quantum physics.
By precisely mapping the planets’ positions at your time and place of birth, Human Design reveals your innate nature, gifts, purpose, and decision-making style through a personalized chart called your Bodygraph.

Your Bodygraph illuminates:
- How you are uniquely designed to operate
- Strengths, talents, and blind spots built into your chart
- A customized approach for making empowered life choices
- Ways to live more freely and avoid stress from “conditioning”
While it incorporates astrology, Human Design differs in that it looks at when the planets were impacting you specifically based on your birth time. The results are remarkably accurate descriptions of your personality.
Think of your Bodygraph like a fingerprint identifying your true self. Once you learn the basics, you have a powerful tool for self-knowledge.
The Fascinating History of Human Design
Human Design’s founder was a man named Alan Robert Krakower, an avid scholar of multiple wisdom traditions ranging from astrology to Kabbalah to quantum physics in the 1970s and 80s.
In 1987, Krakower claimed to have a mystical experience in Ibiza, Spain where for 7 days he received visions and information about Human Design from a source he called “The Voice”.
This Divine voice revealed unique insights into how personality traits and life paths are encoded in one’s exact birth date and time. Krakower spent the next several years systematizing and testing this knowledge.
In 1992 under the pen name “Ra Uru Hu” (a Hawaiian expression meaning “golden sun teacher”), Krakower published the foundational book on Human Design called simply “The Human Design System”.
Due to the profound accuracy of one’s personality revealed through Human Design charts, the system quickly spread by word of mouth.
Today there are an estimated 300,000 students of Human Design across 80 countries with thousands of certified practitioners. Even celebrities like Lizzo, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kellyanne Conway have shared their Human Design charts.
For those drawn to understand themselves and their life’s purpose at a deeper level, Human Design provides a powerful framework. Now let’s look at the key concepts underlying this system.
The Core Concepts of Human Design
Differentiation
A major premise of Human Design is differentiation – the idea that each person is completely unique with their own genetic blueprint and inner authority. Self-knowledge comes from embracing your individuality, not conformity.
Openness vs Definition
Human Design charts show which “centers” are defined vs open in your personality design. Open centers take in energy from the surroundings, while defined centers reflect your consistent inner values. Living in balance between the two is the goal.
Inner Authority
Each of the 5 Human Design types has a specific inner authority to guide their decision-making process in alignment with their design. Following this inner authority provides clarity.
Strategy
In addition to an inner authority, each type has an optimal life strategy to get into alignment with their purpose. Following your strategy and authority prevents stress.
Deconditioning
A key aspect of Human Design is releasing the conditioning we absorb from society, family, and culture that causes us to override our authentic nature. Your design lets you live freely.
By understanding these core concepts, you gain the tools to start charting the clearest path for your life. Let’s look at how to decipher your Human Design chart next.
How to Read Your Human Design Chart
Your Human Design chart is called your Bodygraph, because it displays a symbolic representation of the state of the planets at the moment you were born mapped onto a human body.
There are several key components of the Bodygraph:
The Chart mandala – This circular graph displays the geometric positions of the planets around the earth at your first breath. The angles relate to your birth time and location.

The 9 Centers – Your chart is divided into 9 centers that correlate to a type of energy, intelligence, and theme in your personality.
Defined vs Undefined Centers – Defined centers are colored in and point to consistent traits within you. White undefined centers absorb energy externally.
The Gates – Each center contains multiple “Gates” derived from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Your active gates carry your genetic traits.
The Channels – There are 12 colored Channels linking the Centers that indicate how you consistently process different kinds of information.
Type and Authority – Markers in the chart reveal your particular “energy type” and your inner decision-making authority as that type.
There is a tremendous amount of guidance encoded in your Bodygraph once you learn how to interpret it. A basic overview, however, gives you glimpses into your purpose.
Discovering the 5 Types of Human Design
One of the essential keys to Human Design is determining your type, as this points you to your innate talents, vulnerabilities, and decision-making process.
The 5 Types that emerge from your Bodygraph are:
Manifestors – About 7-9% of People
Manifestors have a tremendous inner drive to initiate and create impact. Their design gives them the energy and inspiration to get things started and make things happen without relying on others.
Because their clarity comes from within, Manifestors do best when charting their own course. They thrive when in charge of a situation or organization.
Manifestors are the most energetically independent of the types but need to cultivate patience with others who process at a slower pace. They prefer autonomy but also crave appreciation for the fruits of their creations.
Generators – About 60% of People
Generators possess a stable, abundant energy supply. But rather than pure initiation, they thrive when responding to people and situations. Their purpose comes from being of service.
Generators do best when waiting for the right moment to act and “respond, not react” to events. Patience is key while their inner authority guides them toward meaningful action.
This responsive style makes them invaluable team players as they provide momentum through their perseverant energy. Yet Generators suffer when pressured to behave like the initiating Manifestor type against their true nature.
Manifesting Generators – Around 35% of People
As the name implies, Manifesting Generators blend the qualities of the Manifestor and Generator types. They can both start projects and also respond deeply according to what circumstances call for.
This provides a great deal of flexibility. Manifesting Generators switch fluidly between action and patience depending on intuitive cues.
Because of their varied energy flow, Manifesting Generators benefit from more freedom and spontaneity compared to pure Generators. Staying open to surprises and changing directions suits them well.
Projectors – About 20% of People
Projectors possess minimal energy for initiating large-scale projects. But they have a gift for guiding others through their wise insights and perspective.
Projectors are meant to shine when invited to share their counsel rather than push their ideas forward. Their influence comes through being recognized as visionary thinkers.
They benefit greatly from down time spent alone to process information before putting forth conclusions. Projectors do well supporting causes they deeply connect to versus wearing themselves out on too many fronts. Focus brings out their brilliance.
Reflectors – Around 1% of People
As the rarest type, the Reflector remains open and receptive, taking in energy from others. They often have no defined centers in their chart, leaving their identity fluid.
Reflectors do best when waiting and deeply contemplating before decisions or actions. Their strength comes from gathering perspectives before asserting their own.
With time to reflect away from the demands of society, Reflectors can access their exceptionally clear inner truth. Their gift is providing insights the collective may be missing. But pressure shuts them down.
