Which is More Effective, Isochronic Tones or Binaural Beats?

The Battle of the Binaural Beats:

If you’re into meditation, chances are you’ve come across binaural beats and isochronic tones.

But what are they? And more importantly, which one is more effective?

Binaural beats were first discovered in 1839 by German physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. According to Dove, when two sounds with slightly different frequencies are played simultaneously (one through each ear), the brain perceives a third, imaginary tone with a frequency that equals the difference between the two other frequencies.

For example, if 400 Hz sound waves are played in one ear and 410 Hz in the other, the brain will interpret a third frequency, 10 Hz, which is the difference between the two.

Isochronic tones were first discovered in 1981

By British biologist Gerald Oster. Unlike binaural beats, which rely on two different tones played simultaneously, isochronic tones use a single tone that’s pulsed at regular intervals. This pulsing creates a rhythm that supposedly helps to synchronize brainwaves.

So which one is more effective? Let’s take a look.

Effectiveness of Binaural Beats vs Isochronic Tones

Both binaural beats and isochronic tones are effective in altering brainwave activity and inducing states of relaxation and meditation. However, there is some debate as to which method is more effective. 

Some studies have found that binaural beats are more effective than isochronic tones at inducing states of relaxation and meditation

Other studies have found that isochronic tones are just as effective as binaural beats, if not more so

There is also some evidence to suggest that binaural beats may be more effective for certain people than others. In particular, those who are highly sensitive to sound may find binaural beats more irritating than relaxing.

On the other hand, isochronic tones are generally well-tolerated by most people. 

Conclusion: 

The jury is still out on which method is more effective: binaural beats or isochronic tones? Some studies suggest that binaural beats are more effective, while other studies suggest that isochronic tones are just as effective, if not more so.

There is also some evidence to suggest that binaural beats may be more effective for certain people than others.

In particular, those who are highly sensitive to sound may find binaural beats more irritating than relaxing. Ultimately, it may come down to personal preference as to which method you prefer.
